Louisiana Dancing Comes to Jenkintown
Jenkintown, PA — On Saturday evening, April 24, Louisiana-style dancing comes to Eastern Montgomery County with an adult dance social at Homestead Hall, adjacent to the Episcopal Church of Our Saviour on Homestead Road in Jenkintown. Arrangements for the dance have been made by Cajun Cottage Events, a group formed in 2009 to promote the music and dance styles of the Cajun and Creole people of southwest Louisiana.
The April 24 dance will feature “The Best of Zydeco”, a form of American roots music that evolved in the mid-20th century, when Creole musicians took earlier styles including Cajun, blues, and R&B, and created a unique genre of their own.
The songs are often sung in Creole French, to music that is characterized by its fast tempo and dominated by the button accordion and "rub-board," or frottoir. Zydeco music was originally created at house dances, where families and friends gathered for socializing. In addition to Zydeco, the dances always include a few Cajun waltzes as a change of pace.
The evening begins with a one hour Zydeco for Beginners dance class at 7:30 p.m., followed by a mix of Cajun and Zydeco music for dancing from 8:30 until 11:30. No partners are needed for the lesson. Admission is $10. Complete information about Cajun Cottage Events can be found on the web at cajuncottage.com.
