6th Annual Black History Celebration
Planned for Montgomery County
Montgomery County’s 2010 Black History Celebration will be held Wednesday, February 24, 2010 from 9:00 a.m. until noon at the Montgomery County Human Services Center, 1430 DeKalb Street in Norristown, PA. The program theme will be Black History 365 - “Honoring our Heritage as We Continue to Grow and Develop as Good Citizens”.
“This year’s Black History Celebration theme is about self, not 28 days but 365 days a year,” said Black History Committee Co-chairperson Margarita McKissick. “By honoring your heritage you gain strength for your journey to becoming a model citizen and role model for others. The legacy you’ll leave behind is just as important as the one you embrace.”
The Honorable Garrett D. Page, Judge, Common Pleas Court of Montgomery County will be the keynote speaker for the event. Opening remarks will be presented by Commissioner Bruce J. Castor.
Cynthia “Polly” Jones, a Norristown community member, will be recognized for accomplishments that exemplify this year’s theme.
“It is our purpose as a committee to assist in broadening Black History, from the perspective of our culture and heritage, in a continual process 365 days a year.” said LaVera Seymour, Black History Committee Co-Chairperson. “We want to invite everyone to come out and celebrate this exciting event.”
The Hancock Elementary School Fourth Grade Chorus and the Norristown High School Choir will provide musical entertainment; in addition the Abington High School Girls Step Team will perform.
